Discover the wild eastern edges of the Peak District on this guided day hike, exploring its deep wooded valleys, open moorland, and dramatic gritstone tors. Perfect for those looking to deepen their confidence in hillwalking, this experience blends breathtaking scenery with outdoor learning, from reading a map to understanding how weather shapes the land. You’ll leave with a renewed connection to the natural world and the satisfaction of a full day spent on the trail.
The Adventure
Starting from the Longshaw Estate Visitor Centre, this circular walk takes you through some of the most inspiring and accessible landscapes in the Peak District. You’ll be guided through ancient oak woodlands, along the tumbling waters of Padley Gorge, and up onto the open moors for sweeping views over the Derwent Valley.
Your local guide will share insight into the area’s unique geology, wildlife, and folklore as you journey between the dramatic rock formations of Higger Tor and Burbage Edge. Expect a steady but rewarding day on the hill, with time set aside for rest, photographs, and a well-earned lunch with a view before heading back toward Longshaw through heather-covered slopes and weathered gritstone boulders.
Who Is It For?
This hike is ideal for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness who want to explore classic Peak District scenery without the pressure of a full mountain day. You’ll enjoy a relaxed pace, supportive guidance, and the chance to pick up essential hill skills along the way. Expect up to 5 hours on the trail, with occasional short climbs and uneven ground.
After the walk, you can reward yourself with tea and cake from the Longshaw Estate Tea Room or something heartier at the nearby Fox House Inn, perfect for rounding off a day well spent outdoors.

About your Guide
Julie, Mountain Leader, Safety Team Volunteer
Julie lives close to the Peak District and discovered her love for adventure in her early twenties, beginning with a novice attempt at the Pennine Way. Since then, she has completed numerous long-distance challenges across the UK, Africa, and the Himalayas, exploring beautiful landscapes and immersing herself in nature.
Julie finds happiness and peace in the outdoors and aims to inspire others to feel the same. She brings her expertise as a Mountain Leader to groups who want to build confidence in the hills or take on more technical challenges.
Recently, Julie has joined the Winter and Summer Spine Race as a volunteer on the Safety Team. The event sees runners testing themselves to run 268 miles along the Pennine Way within a week, and Julie’s skills help ensure everyone stays safe and enjoys the adventure, regardless of the outcome.
Julie is dedicated to supporting others, providing a safe and encouraging environment for anyone who wants to experience the freedom and joy of the Great Outdoors.
