Family-friendly UK adventures: Frequently asked questions

  • Every guided family wild camping trip includes the essential kit you need for a safe, comfortable night outdoors — so there’s no need to buy specialist gear before you know you love it. We provide high-quality tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, pillows and sleeping bag liners for both adults and children.

All the kit we use is chosen for comfort, reliability and ease of use — gear that stands up to Britain’s unpredictable weather while still being manageable for family adventures. Tents are quick to pitch, sleeping systems are warm and cosy, and everything is well suited to shorter walks and camps designed for little legs.

If you’re unsure what to pack, need advice for camping with kids, or want reassurance before your trip, just shout. We’re always happy to help make sure your family feels fully prepared and excited for their adventure.

  • A bit of rain won’t stop us — our trips are designed for the British outdoors, after all. But if conditions are unsafe or severe enough that the adventure can’t go ahead, the trip will be cancelled and you’ll be offered either a full refund or the chance to rebook for another date. Your safety and enjoyment always come first.

  • Your guide will ensure all camps are pitched responsibly and within the law, making the experience safe, enjoyable and respectful to the environment. Find out more about local rules and regulations by reading this article.

  • Not at all. Our family-friendly hikes and wild camping trips are designed with beginners in mind — especially families trying adventure together for the first time. Each trip page clearly explains what to expect, including distance, terrain and pace, so you can choose an adventure that suits your family and your children.

Our guides are there to support you every step of the way, helping kids build confidence outdoors while making sure everyone feels comfortable, safe and supported throughout the experience.

  • We keep our family-friendly adventures small to create a relaxed, supportive atmosphere — especially for children experiencing the outdoors for the first time. Each trip includes a maximum of three family pairs, with one parent and one child per pair.

This keeps group sizes manageable for little legs, allows guides to give plenty of individual attention, and helps create a calm, confidence-building experience where families can enjoy the adventure together without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

  • Yes — but everything is carefully chosen to be suitable for both parents and children. The kit we provide is lightweight, comfortable and easy to pack, making it manageable for family adventures.

Children are gently encouraged to carry what they comfortably can, helping them feel involved and proud of their role, while parents carry the rest. Our guides help balance loads and keep things relaxed, so the walk to camp always feels achievable for little legs.

Leave no Trace: The 7 ethics behind every camp

  • 1. Plan ahead and prepare

Each adventure is rigorously planned for every eventuality — for both safety and to ensure we cause no unnecessary harm to the environment.

  • 2. We move & camp appropriately

Routes and wild camping sites are always carefully selected, in line with all local regulations to ensure we keep our wild places wild and safe.

  • 3. We dispose of all waste properly

We carry out everything all of the items we carried in, and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to any littering — even if it is just a banana peel.

  • 4. We leave the wild as we found it

We leave nothing behind and take nothing with us. Except other people’s litter — you’ll be encouraged to take away as much of this as we can carry!

  • 5. Fires are forbidden

Open fires damage the landscape, so we never allow them — no matter how photographic they are. We only cook on portable stoves we take with us.

  • 6. We treat wildlife with respect

We always move in tune with the wildlife as we’re just visitors in their home. That means not getting too close to wild animals — and absolutely no touching.

  • 7. Be considerate of others

We ensure everyone behaves in a way that gives wild campers a good name — which means no noise, camping appropriately and leaving early.

Testimonials

  • Great Dartmoor walk today for the RICS. Disappointed not to have caught it all after accidentally locking my car keys in the vehicle, along with my two dogs! Hope to be attending another event soon. all the best.

  • The moonlit walk was a wonderful experience. Keith is a great leader: he finds a lovely balance of personal anecdote, informative inputs on historical and natural features and just letting the group enjoy themselves. His engaging and relaxed manner conceals his levels of experience and expertise and the care he takes in choosing the routes and attending to safety, which leaves the rest of us free to simply enjoy the walk. He even managed to lay on nightjars for us!
