Who Is It For?
This trip is for adventurers who want to truly test themselves in the wild and experience one of the most remote corners of the UK. You don’t need to be an ultra‑runner, but a solid level of fitness and stamina is required – you’ll be carrying a pack over multiple days of 10‑15km, with some steep, rough ground. If you’ve ever wanted to combine wild camping with a purposeful long‑distance journey, this is your chance.

Trip Itinerary
-
Meet your guide and fellow walkers at Glenfinnan, where the famous viaduct signals the start of your journey. Laden with expedition packs, we follow quiet glens into the hills, setting up our first wild camp near flowing water. Your guide will cover best practice for wild camping, from tent pitching to leave‑no‑trace principles.
-
A full day of steady walking through wilderness landscapes. Expect river crossings, big skies, and the first real taste of Knoydart’s isolation. We camp under towering peaks, sharing stories over camp meals by the firelight.
-
Crossing rugged passes, we make our way deeper into this roadless region. Wildlife encounters are common here, from red deer on the slopes to golden eagles overhead. The group will refine navigation and campcraft skills, gaining confidence in moving across varied terrain.
-
Our final push takes us down towards Loch Nevis, with spectacular sea views guiding us on. By late afternoon, boots dusty and spirits high, we step into Inverie – and straight towards The Old Forge, the legendary pub that marks the end of our long wilderness walk.
-
After breakfast, it’s an easy stroll to meet the ferry. A short sail across Loch Nevis drops us in Mallaig, where our adventure ends and the modern world begins again.
-
Meeting Point: Please meet at the Glenfinnan Viaduct Car Park (PH37 4LT) at the arranged start time. Look for our group near the main information board beside the pay-and-display area. This is the ideal location to gather before we begin our walk towards the viaduct viewpoint.
The trip starts at the Glenfinnan Viaduct Car Park, located off the A830 in Glenfinnan, Highland, Scotland. This scenic area is home to the iconic railway viaduct overlooking Loch Shiel — one of the most photographed spots in the Highlands and a popular location from the Harry Potter films.
By car: From Fort William, follow the A830 west for approximately 17 miles toward Mallaig. Look for the brown tourist signs for “Glenfinnan Viaduct” or “Glenfinnan Monument.” The car park is on the left shortly after passing Glenfinnan Station when travelling west. Parking is paid (by machine or mobile app), with limited spaces and designated disabled bays. It’s best to arrive early as it can get busy during peak hours.
By train: Glenfinnan Station is about a 10-minute walk from the car park. Trains operate along the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig, with connections from Glasgow. This route is one of Scotland’s most scenic rail journeys.
By bus: Local bus services run along the A830 and stop near the Glenfinnan Visitor Centre, just a short walk from the car park.
By air: The nearest airports are Inverness (76 miles) and Glasgow (131 miles). From either airport, it’s easiest to travel by car or rail to Fort William and then continue by train or road to Glenfinnan.
-
Group size: Small groups of no more than six, keeping things friendly and personal.
Guides: Experienced, trusted guides who know the Scottish Highlands inside out.
Fitness: Expect five full days of walking, activity, and practical instruction. The pace is steady, with regular breaks to rest, take in the scenery, and learn from your guide. You don’t need peak fitness, but you should be comfortable spending full days on your feet and moving with a backpack over varied and sometimes uneven terrain.
Flexibility: Routes can be adjusted depending on weather and trail conditions, always keeping safety, learning and enjoyment top of mind.
