The Adventure
Step into one of Britain’s most remote and beautiful wilderness areas for a four-day expedition that captures the essence of adventure in the legendary Knoydart peninsula. Over rolling moorlands, through deep glacial valleys, and along salt-kissed shores, you’ll journey on foot from Glenfinnan to the sea at Inverie—reaching places few ever do on foot. Guided by experienced mountain leaders who know the West Highlands inside out, you’ll learn backcountry skills, deepen your confidence with self-sufficient travel, and experience the calm that comes from being far from the modern world. It’s the perfect shoulder-season adventure—quiet, rugged and completely unforgettable.
Who Is It For
This expedition is ideal for walkers ready to take the next step into multi-day, self-supported trekking. It suits those eager to challenge themselves with long days on rugged ground but equally appreciate good company, local knowledge, and time to absorb the stillness of remote places. Expect to finish both fitter and more confident in wild-camping and expedition skills.
Trip Itinerary
-
Meet your guide and fellow adventurers at Morrisons Car Park, Fort William at 0900 for breakfast, a trip briefing, and final kit preparations. After a short rail journey on the famous West Highland Line to Glenfinnan, your hike begins—ascending gradually through spectacular Highland scenery and deep glens before settling near A’Chuil bothy for your first wild night under canvas. This long first day builds momentum and takes you straight into the heart of Knoydart’s remote landscape.
-
Leaving A’Chuil, you’ll trace forest tracks and a wild valley that opens suddenly toward the sea. The day’s journey ends near Sourlies bothy, a remote stone shelter perched above Loch Nevis. In calm weather, the group can forage for shellfish along the shoreline, before sharing dinner against an unforgettable backdrop of water, peaks, and stars.
-
This is your most varied day—crossing tidal flats at the head of the loch, climbing steadily to a high bealach, then descending through the quiet sweep of Gleann Meadail toward civilisation once more. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Inverie, the tiny coastal village connected to the mainland only by mountain paths and sea. Spend the evening celebrating your achievement with a meal and a well-earned drink at the Old Forge, famously the remotest pub in mainland Britain.
-
Catch the morning ferry across Loch Nevis to Mallaig—watching for dolphins as you go—before taking the scenic West Highland Line train back to Fort William. Those who wish can stay on in Inverie, exploring further or enjoying extra days off the grid before returning to daily life.
-
An easy-angled descent on a quiet country road takes us back to Ashness Bridge by late afternoon, finishing where we began
