Step into one of the UK’s most remote and untamed landscapes on this three‑day, two‑night expedition through the Fisherfield Forest, often called “Scotland’s Great Wilderness.” Over 40 rugged kilometres you’ll summit isolated peaks, cross wild rivers, and camp beneath skies unspoiled by light. This is not a walk in the park — it’s a true backcountry challenge.
Led by an experienced guide, you’ll carry everything you need across mountain passes, boulder fields, and deep glens. Along the way, you’ll refine your mountain skills, push your limits, and experience a rare stillness that only truly wild places can offer. The reward? A sense of achievement few others can claim.
The Adventure
3 days, 41km, 2 nights wild camping. High fitness required
The Fisherfield Circuit is a classic for seasoned hikers — remote, challenging, and utterly unforgettable. Beginning from Corrie Hallie, this expedition will take you deep into the wild heart of Wester Ross, traversing remote mountain terrain and tackling several of the area’s iconic Corbetts and Munros.
Over three long days, you’ll cross tumbling rivers, climb steep scree slopes, and wander pathless moorland between giant peaks. Each evening, you’ll set up camp in extraordinary solitude: one night high on the shoulder of the mountains, another by a quiet lochan surrounded by deer and eagles. Your guide — a local expert with deep knowledge of this region — will manage pacing, safety, and route choice, adapting to weather and group needs.
This is one of the most remote and soul-stirring experiences available in the British hills — a bucket‑list journey for any serious adventurer.
Who Is It For
This expedition is designed for fit, experienced hikers seeking a true wilderness challenge. You’ll be carrying a full pack over steep, rough, and often pathless terrain, with multiple river crossings and no phone signal once we leave the road. If you thrive on remoteness, self‑reliance, and the satisfaction of venturing far from the beaten track, this is your adventure. Expect to test both body and mind — and be rewarded with a deep sense of peace and accomplishment.
Trip Itinerary
-
Meet near Dundonnell at 09:00 for introductions, a full kit check, and an overview of the route ahead. The trail begins gently on a rugged Land Rover track with the dramatic ridge of An Teallach rising to the right. After the first of three river crossings, we climb into the Fisherfield basin, heading for Beinn a’ Chlaidheimh (914m) — your first summit. Views stretch across an untouched landscape of peaks and lochs before we descend to camp near Am Briseadh at around 650m. Settle in, enjoy a meal in the open air, and take in a star-studded night sky that has to be seen to be believed.
-
After a hearty breakfast, we strike camp and set off toward the high ground. Today is tough but deeply rewarding, navigating through wild, boulder‑strewn terrain and steep bealachs. We’ll ascend Sgùrr Ban, traverse the airy summit ridge of Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair (1018m), and move across to Beinn Tarsuinn before the long approach to Ruadh Stac Mòr — one of Scotland’s most remote Munros. Following a steep descent and re‑ascent, we’ll camp beside the tranquil waters of Lochan a’ Bhràghad, where dinner and a well‑earned whisky await.
-
After breaking camp, we pick up the faint track leading along open moorland back toward civilization. Two final river crossings test your focus before reaching the legendary Shenavall Bothy, a celebrated outpost of the Scottish hills. From there, a final 7km on easier paths takes us back to the vehicles. Expect to return mid‑afternoon — tired, happy, and with memories that will last a lifetime.
